I know you can fish for it, but that’s a lot more time-consuming and RNG-dependent. It would be nice if there was a more dependable way to gain it later in the game, to make getting lightning/frostspark boots a little easier.
Maybe once Skeletron is beaten, an NPC could sell it, or there might be a way to build it with Hellstone or whatever from the Dungeon? Something similar might be done with Climbing Claws and Radar, however I don’t think Ninja Gear or the Cell Phone are as crucial as the lightning boots on every run.
You can find it in a surface chest, and if you can’t locate it there, you may look for it on another planet. ‘Farm another universe’ isn’t always a viable option. If you want one character to stay in one world, and you have a lot of endgame characters and worlds, you have every reason to believe that anything earned by someone else is ‘cheating.’
Sure, an aglet is an aglet, but could you find it while racing across the surface in my wooden armor/spelunking in shallow caverns, or when DCUing straight across a globe at the age of eight?
I should also mention that I frequently have trouble locating aglets and turn to the boxes as a last option. My default world size is similarly medium. Three of my 10 characters, I recall, were unable to find aglets in their environment. Without DCUing the surface layer to oblivion (which I don’t enjoy doing on maps I really play), I looked everywhere. Another discovered aglets but was unable to obtain a radar.
If you can’t find this resource in one universe, you should make one.’ The alternatives, at least, have some logic and cost/benefit (at least corruption/crimson; the first four ores are just unbalanced). I frequently have difficulty finding an aglet, especially if the world is tiny or if I have bad success with surface gen. Or, worse still, you’re playing multiplayer and there are other individuals looking for shoelace caps.
I believe that removing the Throwing Knives and Glowsticks from the’main treasure item’ slot and moving them to the common/optional items slot would be a subtle approach to enhance the frequency of aglets (as well as the radar and any other early loot). Replace the candles with glowsticks and the knives with shurikens.
I believe that if you sprint over the surface while high on a spelunker potion, you will be able to see a number of chests hidden beneath the surface.
The difficulty is that because of the game’s unpredictability, anything can happen. You may either start with three aglets right next to you or search the ocean floor for a truly hidden aglet. Unless you just instruct the game to make additional chests, I don’t believe there is a viable answer. The problem is that the majority of people would drown in aglets.
My recommended approach would be to make them, as well as other rare things, simpler to obtain from crates. When playing with three or more players, you won’t even need to import stuff from other planets.
I’ve had around four or five (medium) planets when I haven’t gotten a single aglet. In some cases, I had to break through the surface layer in strips until I found one, which took a couple of hours.
