Is MacBook Air 2020 Worth It? Here’s Why It Is

The MacBook Air 2020 is my go-to recommendation for anyone that needs a laptop for basic needs such as browsing, email, coding, and basic photo or video editing.

Is the Apple MacBook Air 2020 worth it with all the new high-end laptops coming out every year and will this laptop still hold out for a few more years?

In this article, we address the question: is MacBook Air 2020 worth it? So let’s dive right in.

Is Macbook Air 2020 Worth It?

The base model of the MacBook Air 2020 comes with 256GB of storage, 8GB ram, an intel i3 processor, and a 13.3-inch retina display. All for around $1000.

To address this question I think we need to compare the Air 2020 to a newer laptop within the same price range.

The Lenovo Thinkpad T14 is a very popular laptop for the same price point of $1000.

I have laid out the specs below in a table for you to see side by side.

The main difference I notice between the two systems is the battery life and Processing power. Although the Thinkpad has a slightly better processor, the battery life is cut down significantly.

You might think the core i5 in the Lenovo is enough of a reason to think the MacBook Air 2020 isn’t worth the $1000 price point anymore, however, don’t be fooled.

The Mac OS provides a much smoother experience than Windows, which is why an i5 on Windows may feel like an i3 on a MacBook.

Coupled with the extra battery life and better build quality is a good package for a lot of people.

I think the Air 2020 is a great option for those just do basic tasks on a laptop and don’t need the extra braun for creative programs.

If you are expecting to use your laptop for resource-intensive programs then you should look at the MacBook Pro.

Since gaming is basically out of the question when both of these laptops run on integrated graphics, the main comparing factor would be about productivity.

From my experience with an intel i7 Windows PC, I find that basic tasks are just as smooth as a MacBook. However, when playing games there is a noticable difference when the i7 and RTX card kicks in.

So as long as you don’t need to play the top games, I think the MacBook air 2020 is definitely worth a buy.

Buy Right Or Buy Twice

I think the MacBook Air 2020 is worth consideration if you are looking at a $1000 laptop.

The reason is that Windows laptops in the $1000 price range will need to be replaced after a short amount of time.

I read a study that showed how often people replace their laptops. For Mac users it was 5 years on average and for Windows it was 2.5 years.

So if you do the math right, you are spending twice as much money per year on any other laptop than the MacBook.

How long a laptop keeps its performance is very important for me because I don’t want to have to worry about replacing something year after year.

Saves Productivity Time

We’ve ruled out gaming, so now it’s time to talk about how the Air is great for productivity and will save you time.

There are many benefits of the Mac OS which can save you time compared to the Windows OS over the course of a year.

On a MacBook you would:

  • Have spent zero hours battling viruses
  • Spend fewer hours on maintenance or repair
  • Spend fewer hours trying to learn how to use the OS
  • Spend fewer hours dealing with freezes and data loss.
  • Spend no hours trying to figure out program compatibility with your system
  • Be able to keep your laptop running for long periods of time without slowing down.
  • Spend zero hours fixing the BSOD

Viruses can be really annoying to deal with, especially for the average person who doesn’t know how to get a strong antivirus and run regular scans.

There are many features of the Mac OS which I think are perfect for the average non tech savvy person.

You also don’t have to restart your PC towards the end of the day because it slows down.

Most people don’t know how to deal with techincal issues like the BSOD (Blue screen of death) which is why I think the learning curve on the MacBook Air 2020 is much less.

It’s a well-packaged product that is designed for productivity and takes care of most of your problems for you.

Build Quality

The Design of the Air 2020 is amazing, it has a nice teardrop shape when it’s closed and is made from 100% recycled aluminium.

It’s ridiculously easy to slide into a backpack and light enough that you barely feel it.

It comes in three colors: space grey, silver, and gold. I really like the look of silver as it gives a premium feel.

I love how minimal the laptop is, even though there are only two thunderbolt 3 ports on the left side, I can make do with it.

This build also comes with the new magic keyboard which is an upgrade from the butterfly keyboard that got a lot of flack from the community.

The new magic keyboard is a scissor keyboard and Apple has also implimented a hardware escape key as well as a touch id key.

The Touch ID key is extremely responsive, fast and convenient to use Apple pay.

Saves Money

Companies can save money with the MacBook so you can too.

Basically, companies can either buy Windows or MacBooks in bulk for their employees.

From my experience and from reading stories online, it’s clear that there are a lot of issues if the company goes down the Windows path.

From replacing dozens of laptops weekly, to dealing with software and hardware issues on a daily basis, the Windows laptop is not as durable as it may seem.

Companies will need a large tech team on standby to fix these problems so that their employees can get back to work. I think this is a big roadblock to productivity and you can expect the same for your own personal use.

IBM says Macs save up to $543 per user.

Conclusion

The MacBook Air 2020 is worth it for people that want to use a laptop for basic tasks such as emailing, browsing the web, and minor photo or video editing. If you need the extra horse power to run games or use creative programs, then I suggest getting the MacBook Pro.
